Trip Facts
Overview
Everest Base Camp Trek takes you to the Annapurna range of the Nepali Himalayas. Trekkers can view Mt. Everest, at 8,848.86 m, the tallest mountain on earth, and beautiful Sherpa cultural sites. The incredible views trekkers experience and the culturally rich traditions the Sherpa people share pull hundreds of people to the Everest Base Camp Trek each year.
Following in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the Everest Base Camp Trek follows a path that has inspired thousands of researchers and climbers. In fact, many trekkers find it a rare opportunity to be awe-struck by Mt. Everest without having any technical climbing skills. Trekkers enjoy various picturesque Sherpa settlements on their way to Everest Base Camp. These settlements are protected by various woods and ancient monasteries.
The path is lined with prayer flag-laden suspension bridges, and trekkers are warmly welcomed by the Sherpas. Some of the popular stopovers include Phakding, Dingboche, Gorak Shep, Lobuche, and Namche Bazaar. The trek is enriched by a visit to the Tengboche Monastery, the Everest region’s spiritual epicentre. The seas of sweeping landscapes on the trek boast multiple Himalayan peaks, including mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and mount Ama Dablam.
Reaching Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is one of the highlights of the trek. Climbers get to rest here before making their attempts up the summit. You get to walk along the infamous Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall while walking among the grasslands and giant mountains. Another highlight on the trek is the early morning trek to Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the highest point of the trek. From there, you get to view the largest mountain in the world, as well as the rest of the Himalayan mountain range. The view gets even better as you wait for the sun to rise and the first rays of sunlight hit the mountain range.
The trek also takes you through a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sagarmatha National Park, which is known for its amazingly diverse ecosystems and rare wildlife. If you are lucky, you may even get to see the wildlife like the Himalayan thar, musk deer, Himalayan monal, and a few others. Everest Base Camp Trek is an all time classic trek in the Himalayas as it takes you through trekking adventures, sights, and experiences that are all breathtaking and one of a kind.

Day 4: Acclimatisation Day, Hike to Hotel Everest View (3,880m)
Spending a day in Namche Bazaar helps your body acclimatize to the altitude changes. Our breakfast is followed by a hike to the Hotel Everest View, which is one of the highest hotels in the world. The hike is full of incredible views of Everest as well as Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Thamserku. After soaking in the views, we will head back to Namche Bazaar for lunch. The rest of the day is yours.
Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (3,860m)
The trek moves on and the first views of Everest and Ama Dablam are seen from the scenic route leaving Namche Bazaar. After descending to the Dudh Koshi River, cross the suspension bridge, and begin the uphill trek to Tengboche. Tengboche is a beautiful village that houses the famous Tengboche Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in the Everest region. With an incredible view and peaceful surroundings, it is a perfect place to stop.
Day 6: Trek to Dingboche (4,410m)
After visiting the famous Tengboche Monastery, the trek continues and descends and crosses the Imja Khola River. Soon, enter a more alpine landscape with less greenery and more dramatic mountain views. As you trek through Pangboche, one of the oldest Sherpa villages, continue to Dingboche, a beautiful village that offers a sheltered stop surrounded by mountains.
Day 7: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche
Instead of taking the entire day to rest, optional hikes are available. A popular choice is Nagarjun Hill, but other hikes to climb viewpoints are also available. These hikes acclimatize your body to the elevation, and this one specifically treats you to views of Ama Dablam, Makalu, and Lhotse among other towering mountains and the rest of the Himalayan range. After the hike, you are free to relax in Dingboche and rest for the upcoming climbs.
Day8: Trek to Lobuche (4,940m)
The trek to Lobuche is more strenuous than the one to Dingboche. The trek follows an alpine route to the village of Thukla. From Thukla, the memorial site to climbers who perished on Everest and other surrounding peaks must be visited. After the site, the route follows the Khumbu Glacier. After some time to acclimatize to the changing elevation, the small settlement of Lobuche is reached.
Day9: Trek to Gorak Shep (5,164m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364m)
This day of the trek is more exciting than the others. Trekking the rocky glacier trail through Khumbu, Gorak Shep is reached. The last settlement on the route to Everest Base Camp. After breakfast, continue on to Pheriche for the comfort of lower altitude, where you will spend the night.
Day 11: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Retracing the same trek to Everest Base Camp, but this time the mountain views will be different, you will travel through Pangboche and Tengboche. Essential Information
Best Time
You can trek to Everest Base Camp any time of the year, but the ideal seasons are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). The Spring and Autumn months present favourable weather with clear mountain views and optimal visibility. Autumn and Spring also have excellent trekking conditions. It is also the time of year that Autumn and Spring provide the most optimal and comfortable temperatures. Autumn provides the best trekking conditions and comfortable, crisp air. It is much colder in the winter months and the higher elevations experience snowfall. The monsoon season is rainy and obstructs views of the mountains.
Difficulty Level
This trek is moderate to challenging. It is not technical climbing, but you will be trekking several hours every day on rugged trails with significant elevation gain. The high elevations combined with the long days of trekking can take a serious toll on the body. The majority of the population can physically prepare and gain the mental fortitude to successfully complete the trek to base camp.
Elevation and Distance
The base camp is at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) and the highest point on the trek, Kala Patthar, is 5,545 meters (18,192 feet). The total distance from Lukla with the trek to base camp and back is roughly 130 kilometres (81 miles). You will experience the transformation of the Nepal landscape, from lush forests and villages to alpine and glacial areas, as you ascend each day.
Altitude Sickness
One of the issues that trekkers face on the high-altitude Everest Base Camp trek is altitude sickness. A loss of appetite, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and headaches are all part of the sickness. To prevent sickness, acclimatization days are planned in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Drinking enough water, following your trekking guide and taking it slow reduces your chances of getting altitude sickness.
Maximum and Minimum Walking Hours
The regular working hours for trekkers are determined by the plans and conditions of the trails. The regular trek time is between 5 to 6 hours. The shortest days of trekking last about 3 to 4 hours. Long trekking days can last 7 to 8 hours. Frequent stops on the trails help trekkers rest, take in the views and acclimatize.
Accommodation
Accommodation along the trek is in the local teahouses and mountain lodges. The lodges offer basic and comfortable rooms that are usually shared by two people. Lodges and teahouses nearer to the trails have shared bathrooms, while those in lower altitude areas have private bathrooms. Staying in Teahouses along the Trek helps trekkers learn about and experience the local Sherpa community.
Food & Drinks
During the trek, there is a variety of food options, including Nepali, Tibetan, Indian and some Continental food. Options include Dal Bhat, noodles, soup, fried rice, pasta, potato, and bread. Teahouses offer hot drinks including tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and ginger lemon honey tea. For bottled water, many opt for water purification systems to avoid the plastic waste.
Can Beginners Join This Trip?
Yes, beginners are welcome to the Everest Base Camp Trek as long as they are in good health and able to physically prepare for the trek. Although previous trekking experience is a plus, it is not a requirement. Trekking for the first time can be accomplished easily by a good amount of acclimatization, a satisfactory pace, and the help of good guides and porters.
Permits
Anyone interested in trekking the Everest region requires permits, which are the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits assist in the conservation of the area, as well as provide help to the community, and manage the trekking in the area.
Preparation and Fitness
Your trekking experience is substantially increased by a good level of fitness. It is a good idea to prepare 4- 8 weeks before the trek and include cardiovascular activities. This builds good leg strength and good endurance. This helps make the trek more enjoyable and less strenuous.
Gadgets charging/internet
From what I could tell from the publications around the teahouses along the route to Everest Base Camp, charging and Wi-Fi are usually available for a price at these teahouses. The teahouses at a higher elevation will generally impose a higher charge for appliance charging due to limited electricity. There is mobile reception at most of the villages, and local Wi-Fi is available, but the remote locations may prevent fast internet.
Conclusion
Everest Base Camp Trek offers a beautiful trekking experience; however, it is really so much more. Nestled in the iconic Himalayas, there is so much more than the view of Everest and the magnificent peaks. The trek offers great experiences in the diverse culture of the Himalayas and the great hospitality of the Sherpa people. Special moments are priceless and include everything from the natural beauty of the trek, the adventures, and deeper personal fulfilment.
The memories from this trek are special and will not fade for a long time, making it a great experience. The trek was designed to offer beauty and fulfilment to you and so many others. The trek allows you to see what the Everest Base Camp Trek has to offer compared to other trekking experiences around the world, it really is a great trek.
