Everest Base Camp Trek with island peak
Trip Facts
Overview
Everest Base Camp Trek with Island Peak is one of the best adventure trips to try in Nepal. It is a combination of the famous trek to Everest Base Camp and a unique experience of climbing one of the popular trekking peaks of Nepal. Island Peak, also called Imja Tse, is at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) and is a wonderful option for trekkers who wish to add a peak-bagging experience to a classic trekking adventure. The combination of adventure, the beauty of nature, and the cultural richness of the Everest region makes this experience worthwhile for trekkers of all levels of experience.
This adventure starts with a spectacular flight to Lukla and a trek through amazing Sherpa settlements, lush green forests, and over several suspension bridges, as well as visiting old Buddhist monasteries. One by one, you pass lively Sherpa settlements from Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep, and then arrive at Everest Base Camp, which is at 5,364 meters. The trek includes a sunrise hike to the famous vantage point of Kala Patthar for one of the best panoramic views of Everest and the surrounding several other peaks of the Himalayas. This is an experience you will remember forever.
Once you have trekked to Everest Base Camp, there is more you can see beyond. You can venture onto the Imja Valley, Chhukung, and the Island Peak Base Camp. Before you tackle the summit, our Sherpa climbing guides will train you on the use of climbing equipment such as crampons, harnesses, ropes, and ice axes. Island Peak is known to be one of the best beginner climbing peaks in Nepal. Though it does require some glacier travel and fixed rope climbing, it is still very accessible to those who are in shape, have the willpower, and are adventurous.
The Island Peak summit is one of the most rewarding and memorable climbing experiences one can have. The panoramic views of the world’s highest peaks are incredible and some of the most noteworthy include Everest’s climbing neighbours Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. The effect of standing on Island Peak, above the glacial field, looking at the splendour of the Himalayas in all directions will be an experience to remember.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to climb Island Peak. The spring and autumn months enjoy better weather patterns, creating less dangerous clear skies for climbers. The mountain views are phenomenal. The Khumbu region’s culture is rich and hospitable as are the teahouses you will be sleeping at and the food you’ll be eating. You also will not be sleeping in the wilderness. The teahouses offer warm, fresh meals and cozy beds along the journey.
Island Peak Climbing is the perfect adventure for those looking to experience the spirit of the Himalayas by trekking to the Everest Base Camp and climbing their first peak or simply pushing their limits by climbing some of the highest mountains on the planet. Welcome to Nepal. A Sherpa Trailblazers representative will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport, then take you to your Kathmandu hotel. You will have time to check in and walk around Thamel, known for it shops, restaurants, and trekking supplies kiosks. You will have your first meeting with your trekking guide and have an equipment check and briefing. Stay in a Kathmandu hotel.
Day 2: Fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding
A thrilling plane ride to Lukla begins your adventure. Lukla boasts one of the most amazing airport views and, during the flight, you will get to see more stunning views of the Himalayas. You will meet the rest of your trekking crew. Lush pine forests and charming Sherpa villages line your path alongside the Dudh Koshi River. After crossing several suspension bridges, you will reach your first destination in the Everest Region, Phakding.
Day 3: trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
We will cross the Dudh Koshi River multiple times using several suspension bridges (including the Hillary Suspension Bridge). Then we will enter Sagarmatha National Park through Monjo, where we will begin the steep climb to Namche Bazaar (approx. 3,440 m / 11,286 ft). With luck, we will also catch our first sight of Mt. Everest along the route. Namche Bazaar is the primary trade hub for the Khumbu Region and is surrounded by magnificent scenery.
Day 5: Acclimatization Day
Spending an extra day in Namche Bazaar will allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude. There will be no resting, as we will hike to the world famous Everest View Hotel (one of the highest luxury hotels in the world). There are great views from the hotel of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Thamserku. Other options to fill the day are the Sherpa Culture Museum or the local market.
Day 5: trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
The scenery along today's trail is amongst the finest on the whole trek. A view of the ridges presents Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse, alongside the beautiful Ama Dablam. Once we descend to the Dudh Koshi River, we will cross another suspension bridge and climb the rhododendron forests to Tengboche. Tengboche Monastery, the biggest and most important in the Everest region, will be one of our visits along the trek.
Day 6: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
After enjoying the sunrise over the Himalayas, you will descend through the forests to Debuche and cross the Imja River. The landscape begins to change, with forests making way for alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. After passing through the oldest Sherpa village of Pangboche, you reach Dingboche, a beautiful village surrounded by the Himalayan Peaks.
Day 7: Dingboche Acclimatization
A higher elevation acclimatization day is necessary. You will hike to a viewpoint above Dingboche to get a view of Makalu, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Island Peak. You will return to Dingboche to rest for preparation, and to help aid acclimatization.
Day 8: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche
The path moves steadily up to alpine terrain to Dughla, where the path steeply ascends a ridge where memorials for climbers who lost their lives on Everest are found. Just before reaching the tranquil village of Lobuche, which resides below the towering Himalayan peaks, vistas of Pumori, Nuptse, and Khumbutse are offered.
Day 9: Trek to Everest Base Camp and Return to Gorak Shep
This day may be the most memorable of the trek. The path is taken up to Gorak Shep, and from there a glacial path is traversed to the famous Everest Base Camp. The view of the Khumbu Icefall from beside the iconic Everest Base Camp sign cannot be missed. After this accomplishment is celebrated and photos are taken, the path is retraced back to Gorak Shep for resting.
Day 10: Hike to Kala Patthar and Trek to dingboche
Hiking to the best view of Everest is done before dawn on this day. The sun rising on Everest and the surrounding peaks is a view to be remembered. After taking in the sights, the descent is made to Gorak Shep for breakfast, and all the way back down to dingboche Village is begun.
Day 11: Trek to Dingboche to Chhukung
You will exit the main Everest Base Camp trek and enter the calm Imja Valley to get to Chhukung. This leg of the trek is shorter and has picturesque views of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Lhotse and the nearby glaciers. The remaining part of the day is free, you may rest or prepare some gear for the upcoming climb.
Day 12: Trek to Island Peak Base Camp and Climb Training
You will gradually gain elevation to Island Peak Base Camp. After lunch, your Sherpa will climb up and give you a practical training on the use of crampons and harness, and the aid of ice axes, ascenders, and fixed ropes. The training will instill confidence and assist you on the climb.
Day 13: push to Summit Island Peak (6189 m) and return to Chhukung
This is the most exhilarating day of the trek as you will begin before the sun rises. You will navigate rocky trails and glaciers before you can use some climbing gear to ascend the last steep portion. The views from the summit of Island Peak are some of the best in the world as you will be able to view Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Baruntse, Ama Dablam and numerous other towering Himalayan peaks. After some time at the summit to celebrate, you will then descend to Base Camp and then to Chhukung for a well-deserved break.
Day 14: Trek from Chhukung to Namche Bazaar
Head through Dingboche, Pangboche, and Tengboche before returning to Namche Bazaar. With the mountains behind you, the drop in altitude and the familiarity of the trails help make this leg of the trek more comfortable and provide all of you the opportunity to take in more of the Himalayan views.
Day 15: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
The final day of trekking follows the Dudh Koshi River and passes through the forest and village. You'll cross suspension bridges for the last time on this trek. Lukla will be your final destination for celebration upon completion of the Everest Base Camp and Island Peak trek along with your guide and porter.
Day 16: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu
After an early breakfast, take a morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Once you are settled in your hotel, you will get the remainder of the day off for your own leisure. You may choose to continue your explorations for additional shopping or take a break to recover from the trek. Dinner will be provided by Sherpa Trailblazers for your completed expedition.
Day 17: Final Departure from Kathmandu
Experience the last leg of your unforgettable journey for the Island Peak climbing and Everest Base Camp adventure. Flight schedules will determine the timing of your transfers to Tribhuvan International Airport. We would like to be able to welcome you back for more Himalayan trekking.

Essential Information
Best Time to Climb Island Peak
The ideal months to visit Island Peak are the Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November. Weather conditions during these months provide a favourable and comfortable climate to witness the mountains at their best and provide the best conditions for climbing. During spring, the climbing conditions also improve with the blossoming of the rhododendrons. In the early fall months, dry trails and cool air are present. The rest of the seasons have colder temperatures and increased precipitation, especially the monsoon, making the climb much more dangerous and challenging, adding to the list of conditions of poor visibility in the rainy season.
Difficulty Level
As trekking peaks go, Island Peak is a moderate challenge. The trek to Everest Base Camp is a well-trodden path; however, the summit attempt contains crevasse traversing, use of ropes, and steep snow slopes. This is meant for the more adventurous of the beginner climbers, as good health and a good mental state are crucial to listen to and follow the instructions of the climbing guide.
Technical Climbing Level
Prior experience in climbing is definitely an added advantage, but not necessary. The majority of the preparation to be summit bound is done by our Sherpa climbing guides, who are all very experienced and provide a training session on the techniques of climbing and the use of all climbing equipment and technologies. This session helps prepare beginner climbers to conquer the more technical aspects of the climb.
Physical Fitness & Preparation
It is important to prepare physically for this expedition. The requirement is trekking for up to 6-8 hours a day on rough, uneven trails for days on end. It is recommended to hike with a daypack as training. Jogging, cycling, swimming, doing cardio, and strength training for 2-3 months will greatly improve your fitness and endurance.
Acclimatization and Altitude Sickness
One of the most important aspects of a successful Island Peak expedition is proper acclimatization. The schedule has acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and allows the climbers to make a slow ascent to Everest Base Camp, which allows the body to acclimatize to the higher elevations more naturally. Our guides will monitor every climber for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and will adjust pace as necessary. The most important aspects of the climb will be taking in adequate fluids, maintaining a nutritious diet, and listening to your guides as they will ensure a safe climb.
Island Peak Climbing Training
Your climbing guide will conduct training for all climbers at Base Camp prior to the ascent of Island Peak. The training will cover the proper use of crampons and ice axes, how to attach yourself to fixed lines, how to climb and descend with an ascender, as well as how to sit comfortably in a harness. The training will prepare everyone for confidence and the upcoming climb.
Trekking and Climbing Permits
There are a number of permits involved in making this trip happen: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, and the Island Peak Climbing Permit, distributed by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Sherpa Trailblazers obtains all the permits before your trip so you do not have to worry about them.
Accommodation During the Trip
Accommodation is provided in comfortable local teahouses throughout the Everest region. The rooms have twin beds with bedding. Bathroom facilities are communal. When the support team has set up the Island Peak Base Camp, climbers will stay the night in the expedition tents.
Food and Drinks
Food options in the Everest region are freshly prepared and plentiful. Common breakfast items are eggs, pancakes, porridge, Tibetan bread, and toast. Meals for the day are often Dal Bhat, fried rice, vegetables, and soup. Highly recommended for trekkers, Dal Bhat is an excellent source of energy for strenuous trekking at altitude.
Drinking Water
Drinking safe water is not a concern on this trek. Water is available for purchase in villages and boiled water is offered in teahouses for a small fee. To mitigate plastic usage, we highly recommend bringing a reusable water bottle with water purification tablets and a portable water filter.
Transportation
From Kathmandu (or Ramechhap during busy seasons), a scenic flight transports you to Lukla. The view of the mountains on these short flights marks the beginning of your Everest adventure.
Trekking Distance & Daily Walking Hours
You’ll spend about 5 to 8 hours trekking daily, depending on the itinerary and trail conditions. The most demanding day is summit day, which lasts the whole day and takes about 10 to 12 hours in total.
Maximum Altitude Reached
The summit of Island Peak is the highest point reached for this expedition, at 6,189 m (20,305 ft). You’ll also visit Everest Base Camp, at 5,364 m, and continue on to Kala Patthar at 5,545 m, one of the best Everest viewpoint treks in the region.
Climbing Equipment & Gear
Key climbing gear will include crampons, climbing boots, a harness and helmet, an ice axe and ascenders/descenders, carabiners and safety ropes. A group of Sherpa Trailblazers will provide all the group climbing gear, and you can easily rent your personal gear in Kathmandu.
Personal Packing List
A personal packing list will be shared ahead of time, but personal gear will include warm layers, an insulated down jacket, thermal clothing, a good waterproof jacket and pants, trekking boots, a warm hat and gloves, sunglasses, a sleeping bag, trekking poles, a headlamp, and a water bottle (along with all your toiletries and personal medication). There will be a packing checklist to help you after you book.
Weather and Temperature
In the Everest region, the weather can change in a moment. During trekking season, the daytime temperatures can be comfortable for trekking. Unfortunately, nights can drop well below freezing at high elevations. Summit day can be especially cold, therefore, the right clothing can help you remain comfortable and safe.
Internet, Wi-Fi & Mobile Network
Most villages offer paid Wi-Fi, but connection speed decreases at higher altitudes. Mobile networks cover most areas, but connection at Island Peak Base Camp is spotty.
Hot Showers & Laundry
Most teahouses have paid hot showers. Laundry is only available at lower villages like Namche Bazaar and is limited at higher elevations.
Money & ATMs
Although there are a handful of ATMs in Namche Bazaar, they are known to be quite unreliable. It's better to plan ahead and bring cash to buy drinks, snacks, Wi-Fi, tips, and even a charging and shower.
Travel Insurance
You have to have complete travel insurance. Your policy should cover high-altitude trekking and climbing up to 6,200 meters, emergency helicopter evacuations, medical care, and cancellation policies.
Guide and Porter Services
Sherpa Trailblazers has knowledgeable, experienced, and licensed trekking and climbing guides who care about your safety and success, and porters who carry the main luggage, so you can enjoy the trek with only a light daypack.
Emergency Procedures
The well being of our clients is very important to us. All of our guides are trained in first aid and altitude awareness and carry emergency medical supplies with them on the trail. We give them the option to carry pulse oximeters and emergency oxygen. Serious injury or illness will require evacuation by helicopter. You will need travel insurance to cover this.
Environmentally Conscious Travel
Sherpa Trailblazers is proud to promote responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly travel. We do this by minimizing the amount of plastic we use, supporting the local economy, and showing reverence to the local culture and traditions, as well as helping to keep the Himalayas beautiful for future generations.
