The Annapurna Conservation Area is a world famous area of great beauty and cultural value, which is home to the trek. You will pass through quiet forests, traditional Gurung and Magar villages and the terraced farmland, shimmering streams and stone paved paths with panoramic views of some of the highest mountains in the world.
The journey starts with a beautiful trip from Pokhara to Nayapul, and then a trek through the picturesque villages of Tikhedhunga and Ulleri. The scenic stone staircase of Ulleri leads you into your journey in the Himalayas, amidst thick green hills and waterfalls. As you ascend further, the trail winds through thick stands of oak, pine and rhododendron trees, which are particularly beautiful in spring when thousands of rhododendron blooms cover the hillsides.
At a height of 2874 metres, the village of Ghorepan welcomes trekkers with warm hospitality, cozy tea houses and magnificent mountain views. This scenic mountain village is the first stop on the road to the popular Poon Hill viewpoint and is the ideal stop for unwinding before an early morning hike.
The most spectacular part of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is the hike to Poon Hill (3,210m / 10,531ft) to catch the sunrise. At dawn, trekkers make their way to the top to see one of the most memorable sunrises in Nepal. The sun comes up slowly over the snow-clad peaks, turning the Himalayas into a natural wonderland of gold, orange and pink!
A huge panoramic view of the Annapurna mountain ranges and the Dhaulagiri mountain ranges can be seen from Poon Hill. From the viewpoint, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri (8167m), Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak and many other giants of the Himalayas. The path from Poon Hill winds through lovely woods to Tadapani. This is a quieter stretch of the walk where you can walk in peace under the ancient rhododendron and oak trees and enjoy frequent glimpses of the mountains of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South.
Next is a visit to the traditional Gurung village of Ghandruk, one of the most beautiful mountain villages in the Annapurna region. The local community and friendly atmosphere, stone paved streets, slate roof houses, Buddhist Monasteries and prayer flags are what make Ghandruk famous. The Gurung Museum and the local families give a good idea of their traditional life, lifestyle and belief system, which is unique among the ethnic groups in Nepal.
The most important benefit of a Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is that it’s accessible. This trek does not get to the high altitudes associated with such trips, so the possibility of altitude sickness is comparatively low. Trekking can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels due to the well maintained trails, comfortable tea house accommodation and manageable walking distance. It’s a popular first time trek in the Himalayas.
The walk is also a rich source of biodiversity. The area is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area and is home to Himalayan monals, colourful pheasants, langurs, barking deer, Himalayan black bears and hundreds of bird species. In the spring, the rhododendron forests bloom to create colourful landscapes, and during the fall, the mountain is blanketed with clear vistas and good weather for hiking.
Along the way are friendly family run tea houses offering warm meals, clean rooms and a welcoming environment. Visitors can taste traditional Dal Bhat, noodles, soups, fried rice, pancakes, Tibetan bread, tea, coffee and a host of other international dishes, amidst the true spirit of the Himalayas.
